One of the most significant aspects contributing to dramatic positive change is the extent to which Indigenous leadership was acknowledged, developed and embraced. It is in our country’s interest to ensure that Indigenous leadership is readily acknowledged, and that genuine efforts are made to further develop this leadership capacity. It is also crucial that Indigenous leadership is readily embraced. Part of the process is ensuring that Indigenous leaders have access to opportunities designed to enhance and enable such leadership skills and capacity, so that Indigenous leadership emerges confidently, positively and profoundly.
Objectives
Program description
This program will convene a range of forums for Indigenous teachers and teacher aides working in schools throughout Australia. The program consists primarily of a three day residential program conducted at Cherbourg. Participants will have the opportunity to link their participation in the program to academic accreditation at the Bachelor, Masters or PhD level with continued participation in a relevant Action Research program within their respective schools and/or communities.
"... It was always going to be Indigenous leadership that was going to see us out of the appalling situation that we were in. I am not saying that in every school we need an Indigenous principal... It is possible to have Indigenous leadership in schools if principals are prepared to acknowledge and embrace it."
